THE NEW BESSIE CARMICHAEL CAMPAIGN
Getting a New Bessie Carmichael Elementary School
that best serves the needs and interests of the South of Market Community
New Bessie Carmichael is a parent-led, multicultural, multi-lingual grassroots
coalition of individuals, families, businesses, and organizations, who are fighting to
ensure that the New Bessie Carmichael Elementary School is built as soon as possible to
provide a high quality educational facility for the South of Market neighborhood.
New Bessie Carmichael works to accomplish the following goals:
- Opening the New Bessie Carmichael Elementary School by September 2004
- Empowering parents to participate fully and lead campaign efforts
- Making sure that the school is built according to teacher, parent and community approved plans
- Providing adequate space dedicated to community support programs such as a community kitchen,
a multi-purpose auditorium, and space for neighborhood meetings and special events
- Securing suitable, safe recreational space for school children
- Including state-of-the art technology in all classrooms
- Ensuring that school grounds are accessible to persons with disabilities
- Providing ample on-site parking for school staff and volunteers
